How to Win in an Online Poker Game Thursday, May 3 2007

How to win in an online poker game? Over the years there have been a lot of strategies devised to beat online poker gaming. Here we go over some of the few winning tips you could consider to win in the game.

Bear in mind that these are just tips not set in stone methods that guarantee you to show you how to win online 100% of the time.

1. Always make sure you play your starting hands using hands with higher value.

2. Know when to hold ‘em and when to fold’em. As a player you need to learn the best time to fold a hand in online poker. You will not know how to win online playing every hand. As every profession poker player say, winning or losing depends mostly on the player and not just luck.

3. If you have just started to play poker or if winning is what you always want to do, then make sure you pick easy opponents to bet. This may sound like a very obvious way but it is a fact that some players know how to win better than others because of their experience or sheer good luck although the latter is of secondary importance. Also, if you are having a bad time, decrease the size of bet or simply walk away and leave it for another day.

4. Study your opponents. See if you can read their play and if you can pick patterns in their betting strategy. Knowing how your opponents play will allow you to outsmart them.

5. Learn the art of betting. When you bet you should always do so in a defensive style; another good thing about knowing the proper time to make a bet is that it gives you an idea of your opponent’s hand.

6. Putting yourself in the situation of your opponent will help you determine his next moves.

7. Learn how to bluff. This is a technique that professional players use most of the time to confuse opponents and is lethal against beginners who often will fall for it.

8. Knowing how to win at online poker will mean learning how to play the different types of hands. It is an asset in poker to have high flexibility with different types of hands. Professionals are able to glean right away what a beginner’s hand is as well as knowing when they have bad hands so that they can take advantage. So you must practice continuously using different types of hands so that you can taylor your play in such a way that you do not give away the fact that you are a new player or an experienced one.

9. How the players are seated at the table should also be considered. It is always to your best advantage when you are the last player to take action because this will allow you to observe your opponents action making it more easy for you to create a game plan.

10. Spend a lot of time researching online, read books and articles about poker and most of all learn from your mistakes. Being prepared with al the information and skills is how you will know how to win in an online game or any game of poker.

By following these simple tips, you may now have an idea about how to win in an online poker game; however you could also incorporate your own style because not everything fits for everybody. Just have fun playing the game.

Keeping Your Composure In Texas Hold’em Thursday, May 3 2007

Keeping your composure at the table in most pros eyes is one of the most needed traits at the table. If you cannot control yourself and your chips then there is really nothing else that can help you in poker.

I have seen players throw away THOUSANDS of dollars on terrible calls just because they were mad at previous hands.

This is a GAME we are playing folks, no matter if the chances of the guy beating you were 1 in 100,000 and he put a BAD beat on you, you must MOVE on. If you keep stuck on previous hands in poker, there really is no way to be successful, unless you plan on WINNING every hand you are in.

A tip that I tell all my students is to SIT down at the table or with the amount of money in your poker account that you can tell yourself “I can lose this.”

Now obviously you are not sitting down trying to lose the money, but at the same time you will not be emotionally hurt if you lose it.

Texas Hold’em, whether is being no limit cash games or multi table tournaments, it is a FUN game.

I do not RECOMMEND you play for REAL money until you read a guide or take a course on poker.

It is VERY easy to lose a lot of money if you do not sit down at the table with the right goal and mindset.

A good tip is when initially building your poker bankroll it is smart to play sit and go tournaments.

These tournaments are great at building your bankroll.

See you at the tables!

Understanding How Online Texas Holdem Poker Is Played Thursday, May 3 2007

If you are looking for an exciting, suspense-filled, competitive game of poker to play online, then Texas Holdem Poker may be the game for you. Until you get the hang of it, there are many places online that you can play Texas holdem poker for free. Once you have a better understanding of the game and some practice under your belt you can play for money. Online Texas holdem poker varies from the standard five card draw poker that you are used to. Texas holdem poker has become very popular and you can find several games that are televised, tips are often given throughout the program. Understanding the process is the first step in being a successful online Texas holdem poker player. Some terminology that you will need to become familiar with is defined below:

Check- no bet is placed

Call- you are meeting the bet amount that is already placed

Raise- you are raising the bet

Fold- you are ending your participation in the game

Pot- this is the jackpot

Online Texas Holdem Poker Explained

The game begins with each player being dealt two cards. These cards are dealt face down; these are the cards that will decide whether or not you have the winning hand. You will place your bets or fold depending on these two cards. Most wait until the game is further along to fold, because cards you instantly think are bad, may turn out to be a winning combination.

The Flop

The flop consists of three cards dealt face up, these cards are community cards and everyone will use these cards to try and win the hand. Once the flop is dealt, you will be prompted to raise your bet, check, call or fold. All bets are placed in a clockwise manner to keep it simple. These bets are usually small bets, as players are waiting to see what the rest of the cards are and will bet accordingly. Once all bets are placed, the next card that is played is known as “the turn”.

The Turn

This card is usually where the “big bets” begin when you are playing Texas Holdem Poker online. The betting is doubled from the last round, and players will help the pot grow if they think they have the winning hand.

The River

The “river” is the fifth and final card played in online Texas Holdem Poker. This is where players also continue to place “big bets”. With all the playable cards dealt, this is where the suspense is built. They bet will begin to get higher as the suspense is almost over. Let the “Showdown” begin.

The Showdown

This is the final chance to place your bets. These are most often always big bets. This also where you will begin to see the other players “fold” their hands. If you have the best hand using all the cards involved, you win the “pot”.

Learn To Be A Texas Holdem Poker Pro Part III Thursday, May 3 2007

If you want to be a texas holdem poker pro, you need to speak the language. You’ll find links to part I and part II of this series at the end of the article.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common words and phrases used in texas holdem.

Middle Pair: A middle pair happens in texas holdem when you pair one of your pocket cards to the second highest card on the flop.

Monster: An extremely strong hand that is almost certain to win the pot (unless you get a bad beat – defined in part I).

Nickel-Dime: This is a small-stakes texas holdem game.

No-Limit: Just like it sounds and probably the most well-known texas holdem poker around, thanks the the televised World Series of Poker. This is poker where any player can bet any amount he has in front of him.

Nut: The winnings a player needs to survive as a poker pro.

Nut Straight: Popularized by the movie Rounders, in which Matt Damon’s character watches Johnny Chan on TV winning the World Series of Poker. A nut straight is the highest possible straight in any given hand.

Nuts (or Nut), the: The best possible hand that can be had, no matter what cards come on the turn and/or the river.

Odds: The probability of making any hand. For example, if you have a 25 percent chance of making a certain hand, then the odds against you are 3 to 1.

Offsuit: Cards that are of different suits. You’ll hear this term a lot if you watch texas holdem on television. Whenever a players shows his two hole cards to the camera, the announcer will say something like, “10 and Jack offsuit.)

These are just some of the terms you’ll need to know if you want to sound like a texas holdem pro. It may seem silly to have to know these terms if you know how the game is played. But showing your ignorance at the table could make you a mark.

Texas Hold’em – Cash Games, Sit And Go’s, Or Multi-Table Tournaments? Which Should You Play? Thursday, May 3 2007

Texas Hold’em is a game that has taken the world by storm. It is played in just about every casino in the world. Many of my readers ask me which game they should be playing cash games, single table tournaments, or multi-table tournaments? Which has the best chance of winning? Which is most profitable to the player? I believe tournaments overall provide the best value and chance of success to a player.

You are locked into a 10% rake for the whole length of the tournament. When you play cash games it is estimated that ONE buyin is RAKED per hour that you play. So let’s say everyone is at a table with a 100 dollar buyin… 100 dollars is RAKED by the house per hour? Does that sound like a winning proposition for the player in the long run?? I didn’t think so.

Multi-table tournaments often present the best value and chance at winning big money. A player must be able to withstand not cashing in a tournament for times of 10-15 buyins. As a professional player, I have gone on a streak where I have not cashed in a multi-table tournament for about 15 buy ins. On the other hand, I have gone on steaks where I have final tabled tournaments back to back nights. You have to put poker in a BIG PICTURE perspective.

If you are honestly confident about your game then you should be able to win in the long run.

Always take advantage of any extra perks out there for you including BONUSES, RAKEBACK, and tournament OVERLAYS.

It is also recommended that you download a poker course or guide, and also get your game examined by a poker mentor or coach. These are sure ways that you can consistently be a winner at the table!

Texas Holdem Poker Online – Dealing With the Swings So You Don’t Go Broke Thursday, May 3 2007

No matter how good your poker skills, you will have wild swings in your poker game, whether playing live or playing texas holdem poker online. These swings are just part of the game. How you handle them will go a long way toward whether or not you’re a successful, ie profitable, texas holdem poker player. So how do you handle the swings?

The swings you get in texas holdem online poker can drive you flat out insane. If you don’t learn to handle them, you’ll be in big trouble, both emotionally and financially, neither of which you want. If you’re a naturally emotional person or poker player, this is an extra big challenge for you. I know that from experience. As an athlete growing up, I was an emotional player. I would use any thing I could, such as a bad call against my team, to get myself emotionally fired up. I played better that way. Some people play a lot worse when they let their emotions get the best of them. This can be especially true in poker.

If you let your emotions control you instead of the other way around, you’ll find yourself making bad decisions in your texas holdem sessions. And that leads to one thing and one thing only, going broke. It’s tempting, after a number of bad beats, to think you can force a winning hand by raising big with that 2-7 offsuit in your hand. But your anger isn’t going to force the cards to flop in your favor.

You begin to think the texas holdem poker online sites are cheating you, the poker gods are against you, and no matter what you do, the one card your opponent needs to beat your powerful hand, will come down on the river. I don’t know about you, but when that happens to me, I’m tempted to toss my computer right out the window. Or take a sledge hammer to it. Ah, that feels better. Of course, then I’d be out a computer, too!

It’s hard not to get angry when you hit one of these low swings. But getting angry isn’t going to change your fortunes. The only thing that will do that is to keep your emotions in check and keep making the right decisions during your poker game. If you do that, you’ll get out of the bad swing. As hard as it may be, you have to keep a positve outlook during the bad times.

If you start making bad decisions, you’ll just dig yourself a deeper hole. You start chasing draws, making bad calls, raising when you shouldn’t, etc. and then you wonder why you can’t get out of that rut your in.

Don’t chase the cash. What do I mean by this? Some people subscribe to the betting philosophy of doubling up. What does this mean? Let’s say you’re playing blackjack and you bet $50 and lose. On the next hand you bet $100. You lose again. On the next hand you bet $200. You lose again. And so on. The texas holdem poker version of this would be to step up in limits, say from the $1 – $2 table to the $4 – $8 table, in order to get your cash back. Bad idea. Don’t step up, step down. It’ll take longer to build up your bankroll but you can regain your confidence. Practice your game with a lot less risk. While your profits may be smaller, so will your losses.

Focus on making the right decisions during a bad swing in your texas holdem poker online games and eventually you’ll find yourself playing winning poker again.

Which Poker Site Is The Best? Is Poker Legal In The USA? Thursday, May 3 2007

There are MANY great sites to play poker on. Just about all of them are 100% safe as far as it comes to depositing/withdrawling money. There are many things you need to look at your poker site before you decide to sign up and deposit.

First, you need to figure out what type of game you are going to be playing. Are you going to just play low limit cash games? Are you a strict sit and go player? Are you planning on playing the multi-table tournaments?

Each site is known for their strengths as it comes to gameplay.

If you plan on playing strict sit-and-go and multi table tournaments, then your choice should either be Full Tilt Poker or Pokerstars. If you plan on playing strict cash games, then your choice should more then likely be Pokerstars.

Full Tilt Poker offers a number of guaranteed prize pool tournaments every 1-2 hours. Their tournaments are GREAT and many of them start with 3000 chips, a necessity in my eyes when playing these tournaments.

For cash games, Poker Stars has thousands of tables from .10/.25 all the way up to $50/$100. They have the most players and they are generally the most trusted when it comes to cash games.

For sit and go’s I recommend that you check the structure for both Pokerstars and Full tilt, as their structures our often changing.

Now, many people are worried if Poker is even legal to play in the USA anymore. The USA did pass a law against sending money offshore. There are still many payment processors including epassporte, webmoney, and many credit/debt card processors. Also you always have the option of western union or check transfer.

No player has EVER been arrested for playing poker online. These poker sites are here to stay and I believe you have NOTHING to worry about. The bottom line is that poker was getting TOO big and the government cannot TAX it. This is why they flexed their muscle and got millions of players to not play. There is still millions of Americans playing online and there always will be.

Good luck at the tables!

Gambling – Since Adam Was a Boy Thursday, May 3 2007

If internet is a dustbin, then quite a civilized one: cultural phenomena of all times are dumped here. Let’s take card games – there are a lot of them in the net: on-line-casinos and on-line-clubs hold numerous on-line-draws and on-line-tournaments respectively. But playing cards are cultural heritage.

No matter we want that or not, but playing cards historically appeared to be an example of Vice. As stolen pleasures are the sweetest, than there is no person more interesting, than inveterate gambler or cardsharper. In France a passion for game climaxed at times of Louis XVI, monarch and grandees set an example themselves. Cardsharping prospered along with a game, including at the court. And it was despite strict laws against card-table games, issued and signed by the same monarch! One could be sentenced, fined for 3000 livres, disentitled of civil rights, banished from the town for gaming and maintaining of a den. According to them card debts and different obligations were not legal; parents had a right to recover money from those, their children lost some amount to. But exactly that was considered to be especially disgraceful among aristocracy – a card-table debt was a matter of honor, and should be paid for. Even in the case of bankruptcy the first debts to pay were card-table debts; failure to pay all the rest ones was not disgraceful.

The passion for gaming also dominated in the epoch of French revolution. National Assembly in 1791 banned all gaming, setting strict punitive measures, thus not for players, but for the owners of gambling dens and even for the tenants, who would not inform of a gambling game taking place in a house. But every revolution is as cruel, as hypocritical – a republican government asked painter David to change the types of playing cards, existing in France from the XV century. Kings were replaced by war, trade, world, and arts geniuses wearing Phrygian caps. Ladies – by figures, representing freedom of religions, press, marriage and trades; the allegories of equality of the states, rights, duties and races replaced four jacks. Afterwards card-table manufacturers replaced kings by philosophers and writers, ladies by virtues, jacks by the famous republicans. A directory began to permit opening of gaming-houses, and then farming them out, thus from 1804 from tax-farmers 25 percents levied in behalf on poor.

In general playing cards looked different from what they are now. It is considered that they appeared in Europe in the XIV century from the Moslem world or, on other version, from gypsies, as a log of Tarot, then they were modified. Out of 22 Major Arcana of Tarot there remained only three figured cards: king replaced a pharaoh, lady – sibyl, and jack – rider. And in general out of 78 Tarot cards remained only 52 cards of ordinary log or 54 in a log with two jokers (but, the theory of Tarot cards origin is arguable, but Tarot – is a disputable topic in general, and that is why we will leave it). In the XIV century kings, ladies and jacks were represented as legendary heroes of antiquity: the king of hearts was Charles the Great, the king of spades was a biblical tsar David, the king of diamonds was Julius Caesar, and the king of clubs was Alexander Macedonian. At the beginning of the XVII century at Henry II they started to decorate a playing card cover with the small dotted ornament, trying to prevent marking them (but it did not help). Double-headed playing cards (with mirror images) appeared in Italy in the XVII century; however they came into common use only in the middle of the XIX century.

In the nineteenth century experiments with cards design continued: in 1813 cards, representing Napoleon’s wars, were created in France. There was a round medallion with the stages of battles and portrait busts of state and soldiery figures on every card (Marmont, Talleyrand etc.). For example the queen of hearts presented a battle for Moscow; seven of hearts – military bivouacs of French soldiers playing cards. The indignant allies printed the cards, where hearts presented Britain, diamonds – Prussia, clubs – Austria, spades – Russia, with the image of Alexander I and Barclay de Tolly.

Today, with widespread of online game, aesthetics and poetry of card-table game appeared under threat of complete disappearance. Where is that passion, that mad ardour, when the players were ready to lose estates, public money and wives? Where is that deep interest in bribes, fines, rubbers in the eyes of intellectual players? One cannot lose a wife on-line and see the eyes of the player! But, it maybe for the best – in fact when playing cards one needs to be careful and self-seeking (One might need a wife still!) but the age of fatal romantic losses has probably gone. However the popularity of cards games grows and one can guess the revival of gone culture there.
